MGI 2022 YEARLY REVIEW
#1 – MGI outreach at the Croatia Embassy
In May, MGI supported a performance by William Kanengiser and Loudoun Youth Guitars under the direction of Dr. Miroslav Loncar at the Embassy of Croatia.
#2 – First auction fundraiser
This past spring, MGI successfully held its first online fundraising auction to support programs such as Regis Ferruzza Guitars for Veterans and Marlow Guitar Series. The auction was made possible through the generous donation of items by local businesses, community and board members.
#3 – New Commissions
MGI commissioned three new works from composer Kevin Cope as set pieces for its annual youth guitar competition and began plans for a very special commission of a concert work that will be announced in 2023.

#4 – MGI promotes the voices of key women in guitar history
Through a series of online educational events, MGI engaged scholars Emma Rush, Mariette Stephenson and Dr. Candice Mowbray to give insightful presentations about female concert artists, composers and ensemble directors.
#5 – MGI TOURS The Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Easterseals
MGI staff, board and teaching artist Michael Bard visited the The Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Easterseals, our wonderful partner for the Regis Ferruzza Guitars for Veterans program which provides guitars and lessons to veterans and active duty military members who may be suffering from PTSD. In 2022, the program served 9 veterans and provided over 150 hours of free guitar lessons.

#6 – Marlow Guitar Series presented diverse concerts
From hot club jazz to Renaissance lute music, our featured artists performed wide-ranging and audience-pleasing programs for the John E. Marlow Guitar Series.
#7 – Loudoun County Students creating unforgettable moments
The talent, dedication and passion of guitar students and educators in Loudoun County is incredible and their gifts were on full display when they performed “The Walls” by Sergio Assad with GRAMMY award winner William Kanengiser for the John E. Marlow Guitar Series this past November.
#8 – MGI Online education
Online pre-concert lectures and educational outreach events featured scholars from across the US and Canada who shared their expertise on a broad range of subjects.
#9 – MGI Myrna Sislen Youth Guitar Competition
MGI celebrated the 16th edition of its annual Myrna Sislen Youth Guitar Competition. Over 33 young guitarists shared their skills and the Berta Rojas Grand Prize was awarded to 9-year-old Damian Gadiyak. In 2021, MGI received a generous sponsorship from board member Myrna Sislen which ensures this wonderful program will be funded for the next ten years.
#10 – THE JOHN E. Marlow Guitar Series
For almost three decades, the world’s greatest guitarists have shared their extraordinary talents with the DMV community through the John E. Marlow Guitar Series. MGI is very grateful for the opportunity to continue contributing to the vibrant culture of our region. This is especially so as we consider the ongoing challenges the arts have faced in recent years. Thank you for supporting our series.
Help us reach our end of the year fundraising goal. Our Board of Directors has generously agreed to match contributions up to $3,000 until the end of December so this is a great time to make a donation and double your impact. Thank you.
